| A Genuine Celebration |
[Apr. 23rd, 2012|12:03 am] |
The Celebration of Diana Wynne Jones took place in Bristol today, just over a year after we lost her. It was a powerful, moving and entertaining event, with just enough oddity to be just right for Diana – like the “half of Pepsi” first served as a pint, then split between two glasses, then with another “half” added to it to make the biggest pint I’ve ever seen – about one and a third by my guesstimate. Several times today people turned to each other to comment how much Diana would have enjoyed something – and how it would have ended up in one of her stories.
I wish.
( Cut for a partial account of the proceedings )
It's midnight - I will write up the rest in the morning, for those lovers of Diana who may be interested. |

7 book illustration art icons, 4 of which of covers for Mrs Jones' books - here.
Since I'm here, I'll take the opportunity to ask if anyone knows of any US-based online store where I could buy a copy of Witch Week with the David Frankland cover. (Examples - 1 & 2) |

| Dalemark Fanart - Moril and others |
[Mar. 29th, 2012|01:37 pm] |
Hello everyone! I was introduced to DWJ a couple of years of ago and quickly tore through the whole of Chrestomanci, Howl's Moving Castle and sequels and a few others, before being warned to SLOW DOWN THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY BOOKS LEFT and WHAT WILL YOU DO WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF DWJ BOOKS TO READ, after which I decided I would give it a break.
Last Christmas break I finally read Dalemark, which came highly recommended, and loved it intensely, and was left with a great many feelings and an immense desire to see MORE. I was rather disappointed to find that the fandom is rather small (why?!) and despite some very good fics and a smattering of fanart there isn't really that much to it. I was inspired to draw some more fanart for it, and I've come to share some of it with you. The main piece here is an illustration of Moril's portrait from The Crown of Dalemark, but I'm also posting a few sketches of other characters that I've drawn, below the cut. I hope you enjoy them!
( Moril and Tanaqui, Brid, Maewen, Mitt and Hildy ) By the way, though I believe I've probably seen most, if not all, of the fanfiction and art for this series, if you know of any that isn't posted in the usual places (AO3/Yuletide, ff.net, LJ comms like this one, DeviantArt for fanart, Tumblr), or you yourself have written/drawn any, please please please link me? I would be delighted to see it, even if it's just a 3 sentence fic or a 5 minute sketch. |

| Witch Week on BBC Radio 4 Extra |
[Mar. 27th, 2012|07:56 am] |
|
There's an adaptation of Witch Week currently available on Radio 4 Extra. I've only heard the first ten minutes or so and have to dash to work, but it seems to be well worth a listen. |

| Fundraising DWJ tribute t-shirt |
[Mar. 7th, 2012|12:09 pm] |
|
I recently commissioned a friend of mine to produce artwok in memory of Diana Wynne Jones to go on a t-shirt. I thought other people might be interested in having something special like this in tribute to DWJ. I have put the design up on a Cafepress store. The artist has donated the artwork, and I have obtained permission from DWJ's family to put the artwork on items for sale. All profits from the sales are going to go raise money for two causes. The first is for St Peter's Hospice, the place that cared for DWJ before she died. The second is GUFF, the fan fund that sending me from Australia to the UK to Eastercon (the convention that inspired the one in Deep Secret) and the DWJ memorial celebration in Bristol. One of my duties as GUFF winner is to fundraise, and I feel honoured that I can offer such great items to do that, and also help with donations to the hospice.
Here is the store:

Click on the artwork to go through to t-shirts, bags, mugs etc. I hope other DWJ fans out there like the shirts and other things as much as I do. |

[Feb. 29th, 2012|07:01 pm] |
|
This is by way of a signal boost, to let anyone who may be interested know that there are now more details of the Diana Wynne Jones Celebration, due to take place on April 22nd in Bristol, here. In particular, this site gives directions on how to reach the venue from pretty much any direction, and by most modes of transport other than airship (sorry, Mr Miyazaki). |
